Ebola Border Closure Cripples Trade Between DRC and Rwanda

Al JazeeraSunday, June 21, 2026

The usually bustling border crossing between Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Rwandan town of Gisenyi has come to a standstill. Since the confirmation of an Ebola case in Goma on May 16, the border has been closed, severing a vital trade lifeline for thousands of people. For traders like Murielle Ihora, who sells tomatoes, the closure has meant a significant loss of income. Ihora used to cross into Rwanda daily to buy fresh produce at affordable prices, but now she's forced to travel to neighboring villages to source her stock. The World Bank estimates that between 20,000 and 30,000 people crossed the border daily, many of them engaged in small-scale trade. The closure has not only affected traders but also households that rely on cross-border commerce for their daily needs. While public health measures are in place to prevent the spread of Ebola, some health experts question the effectiveness of border closures. Dr. Elie Bajo, a health policy analyst, argues that surveillance and monitoring of travelers are more effective than shutting borders altogether. For traders in Goma, the debate is not just about public health, but also about survival. Many are struggling to make ends meet, and the closure has dealt a heavy blow to already vulnerable communities. As the situation continues, traders and authorities are calling for the border to reopen, with assurances that they will comply with protective measures against Ebola. The economic analyst Gustave Bolingo notes that the restrictions have serious consequences for the town of Goma, which is already economically vulnerable. With growing concerns about the impact of the closure, associations representing small traders are in talks with authorities to ease restrictions and find a solution that balances public health with economic survival.
