Dutch Blogger Finds Freedom in the Arctic Tundra: 'Here, They Don't Survive, They Live'

Mahil Snejp, a Dutchman living in Russia, recently traded city life for a journey to a remote Nenets reindeer herders' camp. He returned with a transformed perspective, which he shared on his personal blog, 'A Dutchman in Russia'.

Snejp expected to witness a story of survival against the elements. He left with a different lesson. 'I flew out as one person,' he wrote. 'I wanted to see how people survive in the tundra. I left having learned that here, they don't survive—they live. A free life.'

Even in June, snow lay on the ground, with temperatures hovering around five degrees Celsius. Inside the traditional chum tent, however, an iron stove provided warmth. Snejp noted the impressive skill of the women, who assemble and dismantle the entire structure in about an hour—a task that takes him longer with a modern tent.

His first night was comfortable, furnished with a mattress and a duvet, while his hosts slept on animal skins. When the fire died by morning, the hostess simply stoked it back to life. The second night presented a starker test. The herders departed for work, leaving Snejp alone in the chum with some food, instructions for the stove, and the tent as shelter from bears, wolves, and rain.

He describes that solitary night as the most incredible of his life. Alone in the vast silence, conventional markers of time dissolved. 'What day is it? What time is it? I realized it doesn't matter here,' he reflected. 'What matters is that you're alive, you have food, and a place to hide from the rain. Maybe that's true freedom?'

His account echoes other travelers who have documented the profound simplicity of tundra life, where a trip for supplies can mean a day-long journey by reindeer sled.
