Dubai's Russian Summer: A Tourist Finds Familiarity, Not Exoticism

A Russian traveler's recent trip to Dubai left him with a surprising impression: it felt more like a visit to Sochi than a journey to a distant desert metropolis. In a detailed account shared with the travel portal Tonkosti Turizma, the tourist described an environment saturated with Russian language and culture.

He reported that approximately 80% of the crowds at major attractions like the Burj Khalifa, in water parks, and on beaches were Russian-speaking. This, he noted, included not just vacationers but also a significant population of expatriates and service workers. 'Even taxi drivers are often from Russia or Ukraine,' he observed. 'There's no feeling of exoticism or being abroad. It's like Moscow, just warmer.'

The experience extended to shopping, which proved a significant letdown. Expecting lower prices than in Russia, he instead found costs to be comparable or higher in Dubai's malls. He complained of encountering counterfeit goods, outdated models, and clothing of poor construction with thin fabrics and uneven stitching. 'We expected to save money, but spent it in vain,' he concluded, suggesting purchases were better made at home where quality and return policies are more reliable.

His review echoes a sentiment from another Russian tourist who recently noted that a family trip to Dubai cost over a million rubles, underscoring that the emirate is not a destination for the budget-conscious. For some, Dubai's appeal is now framed by its comfortable familiarity, rather than its promised novelty.
