Direct Russia-Malaysia Flights Face Possible Delay Due to Middle East Tensions

Plans to launch direct flights between Russia and Malaysia may be pushed back, according to Malaysia’s ambassador to Moscow, Cheong Loon-Lai. Speaking to local media, the diplomat pointed to the ongoing instability in the Middle East as the primary reason for the potential postponement.

“Given the current situation in the Middle East and where it’s heading—particularly fuel problems and everything else—I think the dates will be moved,” Cheong told Izvestia. He noted that political approvals between the two countries are already in place, but the timeline now depends on airlines resolving commercial issues.

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, had previously targeted 2026 for the launch of direct service. In February, agency head Dmitry Yadrov expressed optimism about meeting that goal. Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin also confirmed in March that negotiations with Malaysia were ongoing.

One possible destination is the resort island of Langkawi. Wan Kamarul Faisal bin Wan Kamardin, deputy director of development for Langkawi, confirmed in March that work continues on establishing direct flights from Russia to the island. In December 2025, Malaysia’s ambassador to Russia told RIA Novosti that Red Wings airline was expected to operate those routes.

For now, travelers hoping for a nonstop connection between Moscow and Kuala Lumpur—or to Langkawi’s beaches—will have to wait a bit longer as airlines sort out their commercial plans against a backdrop of regional uncertainty.
