Delta Hikes Baggage Fees as Fuel Costs Soar
Delta Air Lines is making it more expensive to travel with luggage. Starting Wednesday, the airline added $10 to its fee for a first checked bag on most U.S. and short international flights. This follows similar moves by United and JetBlue last week, signaling a broad industry shift.
The new rate is $45 for a first bag and $55 for a second. A third checked piece will cost $200. In a statement, Delta cited "evolving global conditions and industry dynamics" for the change.
The primary driver is a sharp increase in jet fuel prices. According to industry data, the price per gallon has climbed about 88% since late February. This spike is linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted a key global shipping route, tightening fuel supplies.
Delta reports its first-quarter earnings Wednesday, and analysts expect executives to face questions about managing this cost surge. Fuel is typically an airline's second-largest expense after labor. While strong travel demand has helped carriers offset some pressures, it remains uncertain if ticket and fee increases will fully cover the rising fuel bill. For now, passengers planning summer trips should budget more for their suitcases.
