DCA Grinds to a Halt: Winter Storm Cancels All Flights, Strands Travelers

RIA NovostiSunday, January 25, 2026

A severe winter storm sweeping across the Mid-Atlantic brought air travel at Washington's Reagan National Airport to a complete standstill on Tuesday. Airport authorities confirmed that all departing and arriving flights have been canceled for the remainder of the day, with no indication of when operations might resume.

The decision, described by officials as a necessary safety precaution, affects thousands of passengers during a typically busy travel period. Heavy, wet snow and high winds have made runway conditions hazardous and visibility poor. Inside the terminals, travelers faced long lines at service desks and crowded gates, with many scrambling to find hotel rooms or alternative transportation.

This disruption comes at a politically sensitive time for the capital. The airport, a key hub for government and business travel, is just miles from the White House, where President Trump began his second term last year. The storm's timing is also complicating logistics for congressional staffers and lobbyists returning from the holiday recess.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines directly for rebooking and not to proceed to the airport. Metro rail service in the area is also experiencing significant delays. Airport spokespersons say crews are working to clear runways, but the pace of the snowfall means progress is slow. The National Weather Service predicts the system will continue through the night, suggesting Wednesday's schedule may also see major impacts.
