Crew Illness Forces American Airlines Flight to Make Unscheduled Stop in Dublin

An American Airlines flight from Rome to Philadelphia had to make an emergency landing in Dublin last Thursday after six of the eight flight attendants on board suddenly became dizzy and unwell. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was carrying 284 passengers when the crew reported feeling inexplicably lightheaded and nauseous mid-flight, prompting the pilot to divert to Ireland.

The plane touched down safely in Dublin around 3 p.m. local time. The airline was unable to find replacement crew members, so the flight was ultimately canceled. Passengers were put up in hotels while they waited for new travel arrangements. The six affected flight attendants were evaluated by medical personnel; the rest of the crew and all passengers were uninjured.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the sudden illness. Preliminary theories point to possible exposure to toxic fumes inside the cabin, though no specific substance has been identified. American Airlines says it is cooperating fully with authorities and conducting its own internal review. The incident adds to a growing list of recent aviation scares, including a near-miss between two Spanish airliners over the Atlantic that was averted by an onboard warning system just days earlier.
