Cat Accompanied Climbers on Fatal Elbrus Expedition

When a team of seven climbers set out to conquer Mount Elbrus, they brought along an unlikely teammate: their cat, Machika. The feline is now believed to have perished alongside its owners after the group became stranded high on the mountain, according to Life.ru.

The climbers, all from the town of Zenica, sent their last communication on Saturday, July 25, from an elevation of about 5,100 meters. Unable to descend on their own, they triggered a rescue mission involving eight specialists from the Elbrus High-Altitude Search and Rescue Unit of Russia’s Emergency Ministry. The fate of the cat remains unconfirmed, but no sign of survival has been reported.

This tragedy is the second deadly incident on Elbrus this month. Earlier, an 11-year-old boy lost his life while climbing the 5,642-meter peak, and his father was seriously injured. The back-to-back fatalities have renewed attention on the risks of high-altitude mountaineering, where sudden storms and altitude sickness can turn a dream climb into a nightmare.
