Carry-On Confusion? ATOR’s Simple Strategy for Stress-Free Packing

The first rule of packing carry-on luggage isn’t what to bring — it’s knowing your airline’s rules, says the Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR). In an interview with Lenta.ru, experts noted that weight limits range from five to ten kilograms across carriers, and size restrictions vary too. Budget airlines often use a sizing cage, so check dimensions before you pack.

Once you know the limits, weigh your bag at home using a bathroom scale. Then cut down by using hotel amenities — many provide slippers, robes, and toiletries. Wear your bulkiest items like sneakers and a light jacket onto the plane, and carry your laptop separately. Pack essentials first: medication, contacts, special cosmetics in small bottles. For kids, use smaller product versions. Clothes for warm destinations can wait — buy a T-shirt locally. A capsule wardrobe of wrinkle-free, mix-and-match pieces works best.

ATOR adds that paying for checked luggage can sometimes be smarter. A forgotten charger adapter abroad costs 800 to 4,000 rubles, while a T-shirt is only 200 to 500. "Two such mistakes and you’d have been better off paying for a bag," they said.

In other travel news, blogger Elena Liseykina revealed that some Russian cruises can cost millions of rubles, offering remote spots with no connectivity, biting winds, and walruses.
