Canceled Your Trip? Here’s How to Get Your Money Back

Moscow, May 28 – If your vacation plans fall through, Russian law gives you the right to a refund. But getting your money back isn’t always automatic. Consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor has laid out a clear process for travelers who need to recover costs from a canceled tour.

Start by contacting your travel agent directly with a formal complaint. Many disputes can be resolved at this stage. If the tour operator refuses to pay, ignores your request, or deducts an unreasonably large fee, escalate the matter. You can file a complaint with Rospotrebnadzor or its local branch, either in person or through the official website.

When the operator still won’t budge, your next option is court. A lawsuit can force repayment of the full tour price, plus penalties for the company’s refusal to settle voluntarily. You may also claim compensation for emotional distress and additional fines.

Beyond cancellations, travelers have the right to terminate a contract if their destination poses a threat to life, health, or property. Other valid reasons include a significant worsening of travel conditions, unexpected changes in trip dates, a sudden spike in transport fares, or circumstances beyond the traveler’s control that prevent the journey.

Knowing these steps can save you time, stress, and money when a long-awaited getaway goes wrong.
