British Tourists Arrested in Benidorm After Staging Fake Kidnapping for Cash

Two British tourists are facing serious legal consequences following their arrest in the Spanish resort city of Benidorm. The pair, aged 51 and 37, are accused of orchestrating a fake kidnapping to extort money from their own family.

The scheme unraveled when a relative in the UK received a disturbing video. In it, one of the men appeared to threaten the other's life with a knife. Alarmed, the family immediately contacted European authorities. The Costa Blanca police, alerted via Interpol, diverted resources from other investigations and planned a tactical raid on the suspects' hotel.

Officers arrived prepared for a hostage situation. Instead, they found the supposed victim and his 'kidnapper' relaxing together on the hotel grounds. Police say the men had demanded a ransom of £725 in a crude attempt to make quick money.

Spanish law treats such false reports as a severe offense, citing the waste of police time and resources. The men now potentially face prison sentences and substantial fines. This incident follows a similar case last year where a woman falsely claimed there was a bomb on a plane to stop her son from traveling, leading to a three-hour search with bomb squads and sniffer dogs.
