British Government Rolls Out Summer Savings Plan to Cut Family Costs

Al JazeeraThursday, May 21, 2026

The UK government has unveiled a new initiative to help families manage the rising expense of summer trips and activities. Dubbed the “Great British Summer Savings” scheme, it aims to lower the cost of children’s meals and outings to theme parks, theaters, museums, and other attractions. From June 25 to September 1, 2026, the government will temporarily reduce VAT from 20 percent to 5 percent on children’s menus, family cinema tickets, theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, and admission to amusement parks, fairs, museums, and zoos. The move is designed to ease pressure on household budgets while giving a much-needed boost to the leisure and hospitality sectors, which have been struggling. In addition, children aged five to 15 can ride local buses for free throughout August. The program is expected to cost around 300 million pounds ($403 million). Prime Minister Keir Starmer, recalling his own childhood trips to the Lake District, said, “I know how precious that time is, yet too many parents feel they have to hold back because the cost of living is still squeezing budgets.” Chancellor Rachel Reeves added, “I know the cost of living remains the number one concern for many households. Our economic plan is the right one – supporting families and businesses while building a stronger and more secure Britain.” The announcement comes as families across the UK continue to grapple with rising fuel costs linked to the war in Iran. It also lands at a politically sensitive time for Starmer, whose Labour Party suffered significant losses in local elections earlier this month, while Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK made major gains.
