Bristol's Skies Come Alive: The Quirkiest Hot Air Balloons Set to Soar at This Year's Fiesta

For nearly six decades, hot air balloons have defined Bristol's skyline. The city, after all, is where the modern balloon was born in 1967 with the Bristol Belle. This August, the 48th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta returns from the 7th to 9th, promising skies filled with the usual colorful orbs plus some delightfully odd characters. From a towering Scottish piper to an alien claiming to be from the planet Zurcon, these balloons turn every launch into a spectacle.
Among the regulars, the Scottish Piper stands 150 feet tall in full Highland dress, a familiar sight since 1997 and a crowd favorite at festivals from Bristol to Switzerland. Then there's Slick the Dragon, a giant green beast in a blue shirt who never fails to delight. And don't miss Oggy the Friendly Dragon, one of the UK's largest special-shape balloons at 143 feet, whose big grin defines the event's joyful spirit. Astro the Alien and his companion Astrina will add an extraterrestrial twist this year.
For nostalgia, look for Action Man frozen in a mid-air skydive – though due to aging fabric, he's now tethered rather than free-flying. The Orient Express balloon, traveling from the Netherlands, brings railway charm. And perhaps no balloon captures Bristol's identity better than Wallace & Gromit's Moon Rocket, created by Exclusive Ballooning with Aardman, blending two beloved local icons: animation and ballooning. Whether it's dragons, aliens, or a flying train, these creations remind us all to look up and smile.
