Beating the Heat: Dutch Residents Get Creative to Cool Down

As a heatwave sweeps across the Netherlands, residents in Amsterdam are being encouraged to think outside the box to keep their homes cool. One simple yet effective hack is to hang curtains or sheets outside windows to block the sun's rays. Eline Coolen, the heat coordinator at the city's public health institute, has been spreading the word on social media, urging people to get creative with DIY solutions. The idea is to stop the sun from touching windows, which can greatly reduce heat transfer into homes. This approach is backed by experts like Professor Bert Blocken, who believes that keeping buildings cool without relying on air conditioning is a matter of physics. By keeping the sun out, individuals can significantly lower the temperature inside their homes. Blocken suggests that exterior solar shading, such as retractable outdoor blinds, can be an effective solution. Meanwhile, the Dutch government has activated a national heatwave plan, which includes advice on caring for vulnerable individuals and trialing innovative solutions like fake trees and shadow art to cool down public spaces. Researchers are also exploring the use of greenery, including green roofs, facades, and large parks, to mitigate the heat. According to Jeroen Kluck, a professor of climate resilient cities, even small interventions like mobile 'jungle blocks' and pergolas covered with greenery can make a difference. As the Netherlands looks to adapt to rising temperatures, experts agree that a combination of behavioral changes, housing modifications, and urban design tweaks can help reduce the risks associated with heatwaves. By investing in simple, low-tech solutions, residents can stay cool and comfortable, even on the hottest days.
