Bali's Spiritual Protection Scam: Tourists and Businesses Pressured into Paying for Fake Rituals

JAKARTA, April 22 – A troubling scam is spreading across Bali, exploiting the island's deep spiritual culture to defraud tourists and foreign business owners. According to sources on the ground, con artists are convincing visitors that rental villas are 'under the protection of spirits' and require a mandatory cleansing ceremony before occupancy.

Russian developer Timofey, based in Bali, described the scheme to RIA Novosti. 'What's most striking is that a person in traditional sarong clothing actually arrives for the tourists,' he said. 'They conduct a ceremony with incense and prayers, chant some songs, then take the money and vanish.'

Tourists are told that without the ritual, the spirits will not allow them into the villa and that appliances inside will mysteriously break. The cost, often not discussed upfront, is presented only after the ceremony concludes, with prices soaring up to $300, justified by the 'particularly difficult nature' of the spirits involved.

The problem extends beyond holiday rentals. Timofey notes that foreign owners of salons, cafes, and other ventures are being pressured with similar tactics. They are told their business will fail without a purification rite. In some cases, the scammers allegedly collaborate with local officials who withhold operational permits until the expensive ritual is performed. Many pay simply to avoid delays and bureaucratic nightmares, funding a lucrative deception dressed up as tradition.
