Bali Doctors Issue Urgent Advice for Tourists Amid Hong Kong Flu Fears

As reports of Hong Kong flu spread among travelers in Bali, local physicians are stepping forward with clear guidance for tourists experiencing fever, cough, or other respiratory symptoms. Dr. I Krishna Fatmayono, a physician at a private clinic on the island, told reporters that without lab tests, it's impossible to confirm which virus strain a patient has. Most cases, he explained, require only symptom management, but those with persistent fever or worsening symptoms should seek further evaluation.
Private clinics across Bali have seen a noticeable rise in foreign patients in recent weeks, according to another local doctor, Sutria. He warned that many travelers are turning to self-medication—popping antibiotics or pushing through high fevers to continue their vacations. "We strongly advise against treating yourself," Sutria said. "If your fever doesn't break or you feel worse, come in for proper care." Doctors also cautioned that dengue fever, which can mimic flu symptoms, remains a risk on the island.
The Hong Kong flu typically brings high fever, severe cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, muscle pain, and extreme fatigue. While most people recover with mild to moderate illness, older adults, young children, and those with chronic conditions face higher risks of complications like pneumonia. Russian health authorities have also reminded travelers returning from Bali to monitor their health closely, noting that dengue can masquerade as flu and that flu season on the island, while past its June peak, is still active.
