Azur Air Announces Staff Cuts as Regulators Scrutinize Operations

Russian charter carrier Azur Air is set to reduce its workforce by six percent, a move that follows a surge in passenger complaints and increased regulatory oversight. The news, first reported by the Telegram channel Mash, indicates layoffs across all departments beginning in April, including pilots and cabin crew.

The decision coincides with an active investigation by Rostransnadzor, the federal transport watchdog. The agency is reviewing the airline's electronic documentation and has held meetings with its management. Simultaneously, inspectors are conducting spot checks of aircraft directly at airports. One such check on a flight from Novosibirsk to Pattaya revealed minor violations, prompting a separate probe by a regional prosecutor's office.

Passenger grievances have mounted since the start of the year, with at least six notable incidents involving significant flight delays or emergency landings documented in 2026. Despite these operational troubles, Azur Air remains a vital link for travelers in certain Russian regions, where it is the sole option for direct international flights.

The staff reduction appears to be a preemptive measure as Rostransnadzor's review continues. Should the investigation confirm systemic failures, the airline faces potential sanctions, which could include restrictions on its operating certificate.
