Avalanche in Buryatia: Three Tourists Found Alive, One Dead

Rescuers in Siberia have located three members of a tourist group caught in an avalanche in the remote mountains of Buryatia, officials confirmed Wednesday. The survivors sustained injuries of varying severity and were airlifted to safety. A fourth member of the party was found dead at the scene.

The group, which consisted of seven people, was climbing near the peak of Munkh-Sardyk in the Eastern Sayan range when a slab of snow broke loose on the pass known as “26th Party Congress.” The avalanche swept over them on Tuesday, according to the regional branch of Russia’s Emergency Ministry.

Search teams from the Baikal Rescue Unit discovered the three survivors and provided first aid before transporting them to a base camp, where they were handed over to ambulance crews. The identity of the deceased tourist has not yet been released.

Authorities said the group had not registered their route with rescue services, a common safety measure in the region. They were attempting to ascend to Constitution Peak when the avalanche struck. The incident highlights the dangers of unregulated backcountry travel in high-altitude terrain, where snow conditions can change rapidly.

Rescuers continue to monitor the area, but no other missing persons have been reported. The injured tourists are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
