Austrian Adventurer Finds Russian Visa Process 'Surprisingly Simple' on Global Trek

RIA NovostiFriday, February 27, 2026

VIENNA, Feb 26 – For Gerfried Svoboda, an Austrian man on an eight-year global odyssey in a repurposed military vehicle, Russia’s visa procedures have been a straightforward part of the journey. The Salzburg native, who has traversed Russia four times, describes the process as uncomplicated.

"You need a visa. For a trip under a month, you can get an electronic visa online. For longer stays, you go through an embassy or a visa agency," Svoboda explained in an interview. "It costs a little, but overall it's quite simple. I've never had a single problem—not with entry, not with the documents."

Svoboda left his job in 2018 to embark on his round-the-world expedition in a Pinzgauer 6x6 all-terrain truck. He has since covered roughly 100,000 kilometers across Europe, Central Asia, and South America. His Russian routes have included winter trips through Siberia and the remote Magadan region, where his vehicle was stored for over a year during pandemic travel restrictions before he pressed on.

Now aiming to complete his circumnavigation, Svoboda plans to ship his vehicle across the Pacific and re-enter Russia, making it the final leg of an extraordinary personal voyage. His experience counters a common perception of bureaucratic difficulty, highlighting a streamlined system for determined travelers.
