American Tourist Killed in Bangkok After Stalking Ex-Girlfriend

A vacation in Thailand ended in tragedy for an American tourist this week, following a violent confrontation linked to a soured romance. Stein Heath Cole, 54, died after being assaulted in a Bangkok shop on February 16.
According to reports, Cole had been in Thailand for several months and began a relationship with a neighbor, 24-year-old Nan Phaut Ar Cho. Her family disapproved of the union, citing Cole's aggressive behavior, and the couple eventually separated. Cole reportedly refused to accept the breakup, making repeated, distressed visits to her home. The young woman was forced to relocate, but Cole continued to pursue her.
The situation reached its fatal conclusion when Cole entered a shop where Nan's new boyfriend worked. Police reports indicate Cole was armed with a knife. The boyfriend called for assistance, and together with three friends, he attacked Cole. The group used a metal pipe and knives during the assault. Cole succumbed to his injuries.
Thai police have arrested four individuals in connection with the killing, holding them on charges of assault leading to death. The case echoes another recent high-profile sentencing in Thailand, where a Russian tourist received a 25-year prison term for murdering his girlfriend's former partner.
