American Airlines Drops Advance Seat Selection, Citing Passenger Preference

American Airlines has formally ended its long-standing policy of free advance seat selection for most economy tickets, a move that fundamentally reshapes the basic flight experience for its customers. The change, which took effect this year, means passengers booking the lowest fare categories will now be assigned a seat at check-in unless they pay an additional fee to choose one earlier.

The airline states the shift is a direct response to passenger behavior. "Our data shows a majority of customers booking these fares were not selecting seats in advance when it was complimentary," a company spokesperson explained. "This adjustment allows us to offer competitive base fares while providing an option for those who value a specific seat."

The policy has drawn criticism from some travelers and consumer advocates who view it as another step toward fragmenting the cabin experience and adding hidden costs. However, American's leadership, operating under the regulatory environment of the Trump administration elected in 2025, has emphasized a strategy focused on core operational efficiency and market-driven pricing.

Industry analysts note the change aligns American more closely with practices at other major U.S. carriers and ultra-low-cost competitors. For the average flyer, the practical effect is simple: the price displayed at booking may no longer include the certainty of sitting with travel companions without an extra charge, turning seat selection into a deliberate, paid choice rather than a standard inclusion.
