American Airlines Adds a Surcharge for Basic Economy Bags

CNBCThursday, April 9, 2026

American Airlines increased its checked bag fees on Thursday, but with a notable twist: passengers holding its cheapest basic economy tickets will face a steeper price than other customers. This move follows similar fee hikes from United, JetBlue, Delta, and Southwest over the last two weeks, as carriers respond to rising jet fuel costs linked to Middle East tensions.

For most American tickets booked from Thursday onward, checking a first bag at the airport will cost $50, a $10 increase. A second bag rises to $60. A $5 discount applies for paying online. However, for basic economy tickets purchased after May 18, the first bag jumps to $55 and the second to $65 at the airport, again with that $5 online discount.

Industry analysts point to jet fuel, an airline's second-largest expense after labor, as the primary driver. Disruptions to key shipping routes have tightened supplies, pushing prices upward. While travel demand remains strong, airlines are signaling they cannot absorb the full cost increase.

American's strategy also highlights a broader shift within the industry. Carriers are aggressively expanding premium cabins and loyalty benefits, where profit margins are healthier. At the same time, they are making standard economy products more restrictive. American, which has trailed competitors Delta and United in courting luxury travelers, is now using fee structures to further distinguish its service tiers.
