Algeria Moves to Cancel Air Treaty with UAE, Flights Continue for Now

DUBAI – The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed on Sunday that it has received formal notification from Algeria of its intent to terminate the air services agreement between the two nations. The news, first reported by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), marks a significant diplomatic shift but will not immediately ground flights.
In a statement, the GCAA clarified that Algeria’s move follows standard procedures outlined in international aviation treaties. The existing agreement will remain active throughout a mandated notification period, meaning air travel between Algeria and the UAE continues uninterrupted for the time being.
The Algerian state news agency APS reported the initial decision on Saturday, noting that Algiers had begun the necessary procedures to dissolve the pact, originally signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013. Official notification was delivered through diplomatic channels, with a copy sent to the Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
While the GCAA’s statement struck a procedural tone, the underlying decision points to a notable cooling in bilateral relations. Aviation analysts will be watching closely to see if this technical step precedes broader economic or political repercussions. For now, passengers and airlines can expect business as usual, but the future of this key air link is now in question.
