Albanians Unite Against Kushner-Linked Resort in Protected Coastal Area
A massive protest swept through the streets of Tirana, Albania's capital, as thousands of demonstrators voiced their opposition to a luxury resort project backed by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. The proposed hotel complex, tied to Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump, has sparked widespread outrage over alleged corruption and environmental concerns. Since late May, protesters have gathered daily to express their discontent, with many traveling from abroad to join the movement. On Saturday, a sea of Albanian and US flags filled the streets as protesters chanted slogans and released red balloons, projecting a powerful message onto the prime minister's office: 'Albania is not for sale.' For many, the issue is not about opposing development, but rather about demanding transparency and accountability in projects that affect their lives. The planned resort, along with another development on nearby Sazan Island, would be situated near a protected area that serves as a breeding ground for migratory birds, including flamingos. As the protests continue to gain momentum, demonstrators are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of secretive deals and prioritizing personal interests over the country's well-being. Rama remains defiant, attributing the controversy to the involvement of the Kushner family and the lingering influence of the Trump name.
