Airbnb's AI Now Manages One-Third of North American Customer Support

Airbnb announced this week that its proprietary artificial intelligence system is resolving about a third of all customer service requests in the United States and Canada. The company plans a worldwide expansion of the technology, projecting that within a year, AI will manage over 30% of its global support tickets across every language it serves.

Chief Executive Brian Chesky, speaking on an earnings call, framed the shift as both an economic and qualitative leap. "This reduces our service costs, but more importantly, it represents a major upgrade in service quality," he stated, implying the AI may outperform human agents in certain scenarios.

The move is part of a broader push to rebuild Airbnb around AI. The company recently hired Ahmad Al-Dahle, formerly of Meta and Apple, as its Chief Technology Officer to lead the charge. Chesky described a future app that "knows you," assisting guests with full trip planning and helping hosts manage their operations.

Chesky argued that Airbnb's unique data—including 200 million verified user profiles and half a billion reviews—creates a defensible advantage. "A generic chatbot can't message our hosts or access this network," he told analysts, emphasizing the platform's 18-year foundation of payments, insurance, and trust systems.

Financially, the company reported strong fourth-quarter revenue of $2.78 billion, exceeding expectations. It forecasts continued growth in the low double digits this year.

While investors raised concerns about AI platforms potentially encroaching on the rental market, Chesky dismissed them, noting that traffic from AI conversational tools converts better than traditional web search. Internally, the adoption is rapid: 80% of Airbnb engineers now use AI tools, with a goal of 100% soon.
