Air Travel Between Russia and China Surges 48% in Early 2026

The number of passengers flying between Russia and China jumped by nearly 50 percent during the first five months of 2026, topping 900,000 travelers. The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed the figures, which mark a sharp recovery in air travel between the two nations.

The surge follows a series of visa-free travel measures introduced by both governments. China first launched a 30-day visa-free policy for Russian citizens in September 2025, and Russia matched the move in December. In May, Beijing extended its program through December 31, 2027. Just this week, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree extending Russia’s visa-free entry for Chinese nationals until the same date.

Ministry officials said they expect the upward trend to continue through the end of the year. The 48 percent growth rate reflects both pent-up demand and the easing of travel restrictions, positioning the Russia-China air corridor as one of the busiest international routes in the region.
