Air New Zealand's In-Flight Beds Are Now Up for Grabs

For travelers facing the marathon journey to New Zealand, a novel way to sleep is finally ready for booking. Starting May 18 for flights from November, Air New Zealand will offer its Economy Skynest—six bunk beds—on certain Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner routes.

The service, aimed at economy passengers on ultra-long-haul trips, provides a flat bed with a mattress, sheets, a privacy curtain, and essentials like a reading light and charging ports. Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar stated the goal is to let passengers stretch out and get meaningful rest, making the long trip to New Zealand less daunting.

There are limitations. Initially, the Skynest will only operate on flights between New York (JFK) and Auckland. Access isn't included with a ticket; passengers must buy a seat and then pay an extra NZ$495 (roughly $280) for a single session. Each flight offers two sessions, with bedding refreshed between them. The airline has clear rules: only one person per bunk, no food, and a request to avoid strong fragrances. Snoring is permitted.

After years of development and a trial run in 2024, the Skynest becomes a tangible option. It joins the airline's existing Economy Skycouch, which converts rows into a sofa-like space. For those booked on the New York route, a proper lie-down in economy is no longer just a dream.
