A Traveler's View: Contrasting Rural Life in Germany and Russia

A Russian travel blogger, writing for his TrueStory Travel blog on the Zen platform, recently shared candid observations from a trip to Germany, focusing on the stark contrasts between villages there and back home. His account paints a picture of two different worlds.

He first pointed to the roads. In German villages, he noted, paved asphalt appears 'wherever it's possible to lay it.' This stands in sharp relief to the seasonal challenges on Russian rural roads: autumn mud, summer dust, and winter ruts left by snowplows.

Transportation presented another clear divide. The blogger explained that in Germany, even the smallest village is connected by a bus network. Schedules are designed around residents' needs, with regular, thoughtfully planned routes. In Russia, he stated, public transport in most villages is either nonexistent or runs so infrequently it's unreliable.

The absence of fences around German homes struck him as particularly symbolic. 'The reason is simple,' he wrote. 'Crime rates are very low, especially in the countryside. Why fence yourself in if nothing will be stolen? There's also an open way of life here; it's believed an honest person has nothing to hide.'

He also observed that houses in German villages consistently look well-kept, with residents maintaining their properties. On a cultural note, he highlighted one ubiquitous feature: a pub. 'There might not be a post office, pharmacy, or shop—those will be in the next big village. But a beer pub you will always find,' the traveler concluded.

In a previous post, the same blogger described a German man sampling Russian vodka and wincing, noting locals' preference for fruit-based schnapps.
