A Teenager’s First Trip Abroad Ends in a Thai Jail Over a $100 Watch

An 18-year-old tourist’s first international vacation took a shocking turn when he was arrested at a Thai airport for grabbing another traveler’s watch. Lucas Ranger now faces up to five years in prison after the incident on July 3, according to Thai police.

The teen claims he mistakenly picked up the watch from a security tray at the airport, thinking it was his own. But police arrested him for stealing the timepiece from New Zealander Surata Tani. Ranger’s mother insists her son was exhausted and ill after a long sea journey, and that he never intended to steal. “He should have handed it back, but that doesn’t deserve years in a Thai jail,” she said.

Ranger’s lawyer has since returned the watch, which is valued at just $100, and offered Tani $1,000 in compensation along with a written apology. Despite that, the teen remains in custody and could also face a fine of up to 10,000 baht (about $280). The case is still under investigation, and his legal team is pushing for a review.
