A Slice of Vologda Now Open on Nevsky Prospekt

St. Petersburg has a new neighbor, and it’s bringing the best of the Russian north right to the city’s front door. Governors Gennady Filimonov of the Vologda Region and Alexander Beglov of St. Petersburg officially opened a year-round cultural and tourist center for Vologda on Nevsky Prospekt, just steps from Palace Square.

The center is more than just an information booth. It’s a permanent home for Vologda’s tourism, culture, food, and festivals, designed to give locals and visitors a real taste of the region. Filimonov called it a concrete step in the partnership the two regions agreed to at the 2024 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. “We’re not just talking, we’re doing,” he said, thanking Beglov for personal support and calling St. Petersburg the region’s “older brother.”

Beglov, for his part, described the project as a gift to the city. “Writer Vasily Belov said Vologda is the soul of Russia. Now a piece of that soul is here,” he said, noting the center will grow and change with new exhibits.

The space includes a tourism desk, a shop for local products and souvenirs, and areas for workshops, tastings, and family programs. A special section is dedicated to Veliky Ustyug and the nationwide Father Frost. The Vologda government is running it as a non-commercial project to showcase the region’s history, its people, and what it has to offer.

For anyone wandering Nevsky, it’s a chance to step into the north without leaving the city.
