A Six-Hour Wait Ends in Tragedy on Mount Marcy

A 21-year-old experienced hiker from New Jersey, Brianna More, died of exposure last week after a fall in New York's Adirondack Mountains. According to a New York Post report, More had set out with her dog to summit Mount Marcy, the state's highest peak, when she slipped from a slope and became stranded.
More managed to call for help. Emergency responders searched the area for six hours using snowmobiles and a helicopter, but low cloud cover hampered visibility. She was not located until 9 p.m. and was found unresponsive, having succumbed to severe hypothermia. Temperatures on the mountain that day ranged from 8 to 20 degrees below zero.
Her dog remained by her side throughout the ordeal and was found unharmed next to her by rescue personnel. The incident underscores the swift and lethal nature of winter conditions, even for seasoned adventurers. It follows other recent cold-weather tragedies abroad, including the death of a 12-year-old boy and his father in Scotland.
