A Single Drink Changed His Life: New Campaign Warns Travelers About Methanol Poisoning

A night out in Laos left Calum MacDonald with permanent vision loss after just one drink. The 20-something from Surrey recalls seeing “a blinding kaleidoscopic light” less than 48 hours later. He had been poisoned by methanol, a toxic industrial alcohol sometimes found in counterfeit or illegally produced drinks. Now he’s fronting a UK government campaign to warn others. “If I had known the risks, I probably would be in a different situation today,” he told BBC Breakfast.

Methanol is deadly in small doses—just 30ml, about a single shot, can kill an adult. Even smaller amounts can cause blindness or permanent harm. The UK Foreign Office now lists methanol warnings for 29 destinations, including popular spots like Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam. Margaret McKie lost her 38-year-old daughter Kirsty in Bali. Kirsty was careful about where she bought alcohol, but when she fell ill, she thought it was a hangover. By the time she reached hospital, it was too late. McKie urges travelers to watch for symptoms: vomiting, confusion, blurred vision, and difficulty looking at bright lights. “If you notice a friend who seems more ill, get them help,” she says.

The campaign is targeting young travelers through TikTok, YouTube, and influencers, and the warnings are now part of the UK school curriculum. Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer says the goal is to reach backpackers who might not check government websites. MacDonald’s advice is simple: “Enjoy your travel, but get all the information before you go. Know the symptoms, look out for your friends, and you can mitigate the risks.”
