A Polar Paradise with Perils: Baranovskaya's Antarctic Cruise Warning

RIA NovostiSunday, April 5, 2026

Yulia Baranovskaya recently returned from a journey few will ever make: a cruise through the icy waters of Antarctica. The television and radio host shared her experience, describing both the profound beauty and the inherent risks of such an expedition.

Her voyage began on King George Island. From the deck, passengers viewed glaciers like Perito Moreno and Viedma. Baranovskaya recalls a surreal moment during lunch opposite the Spegazzini Glacier. "We were eating, and suddenly, right in front of us, a massive iceberg surged up from the water," she said. "It was breathtakingly beautiful."

That beauty, she stresses, demands respect. Ships maintain a safe distance from glacier faces for a critical reason. "It's not just scenery; it's a force of nature," Baranovskaya explained. "No one knows when a huge piece of ice, hidden underwater, might break off and surface. A mass the size of an iceberg could capsize a boat in an instant."

Disembarking onto the continent itself comes with strict protocols. Visitors must wash their boots in a special solution to prevent introducing foreign organisms. All waste, including food scraps, must be stored on the ship. Interaction with wildlife is prohibited; observers must stay at least five meters from most animals and twenty meters from whales and elephant seals.

For Baranovskaya, the trip was a lesson in awe and responsibility, a reminder that the world's last wilderness is both fragile and formidable.
