A Minke Whale Puts on a Show Near Vladivostok's Shoreline

Residents of Vladivostok got a surprise this week when a large Minke whale swam right up to local boats, putting on a splashy display near the city's coastline. Footage of the encounter, showing the animal surfacing repeatedly and kicking up spray, was shared on the Telegram channel Amur Mash.

The whale was first spotted in Sobol Bay, where it lingered close to vessels and made several dramatic dives. It later appeared in Tikhaya Bay, continuing its close-quarters tour of the area.

According to scientists from the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, this behavior is perfectly normal for this time of year. The whale is likely following a food migration. "It probably came in search of prey," researchers explained, noting that herring are currently moving toward the shore to spawn, drawing the whales in with them.

The Minke, also known as the lesser rorqual, is the most common whale species in the Sea of Japan. Experts say it regularly appears off the coast of Primorye during the warmer months.

This sighting follows a recent viral video from Russia showing a tigress named Elena eating snow, proving the region's wildlife is never short on surprises.
