A Fresh Perspective on Familiar Waters: A Great Lakes Cruise Redefines Home

From the warmth of a cedarwood sauna, the blue horizon of Lake Michigan stretched endlessly. The view wasn't new to this Chicago native, but from the deck of the Ponant Le Champlain, it felt profoundly different—wider, deeper, and full of motion. This was day six of a nine-night Great Lakes voyage from Toronto to Milwaukee, a collaboration between Smithsonian Journeys and French cruise line Ponant. The partnership, now in its fifth year, offers over thirty departures in 2026, pairing intimate ships carrying 184 guests with expert-led exploration.

The journey reshaped my understanding of a lake I'd taken for granted. One morning, I found our ship navigating the intricate Welland Canal. In the ship's Panoramic Lounge, transport geographer Viktor Kaczkowski provided a spontaneous, captivating narration as the locks lifted us, over twelve hours, to the height of Niagara Falls. This access to experts defined the trip. At dinner, maritime historian Fred Stonehouse shared a startling local fact: the greatest loss of passenger life in a maritime disaster wasn't the Titanic, but the SS Eastland, which capsized in the Chicago River in 1915, claiming 844 lives. As a Chicagoan, I had passed the site countless times, unknowingly.

Ashore, highlights included Niagara's wine country with a guide from the Mi'kmaq First Nation, and car-free Mackinac Island. There, a horse-drawn carriage took us through cedar forests to the Grand Hotel, its exuberant 1970s interiors a joyful contrast to the island's historic calm. Disembarking in Milwaukee, I headed straight to Chicago. I stood on the riverwalk near my hotel, looking at the placid water where the Eastland tragedy unfolded, then gazed at the distant blue line of Lake Michigan. The lake I once overlooked now felt like a discovered country, its history and scale permanently etched in my view.
