A Former Air Canada Pilot Is Accused of Flying Without the Right License for Nearly Two Decades

Al JazeeraWednesday, June 10, 2026

A retired Air Canada pilot is facing criminal charges after police say he flew hundreds of flights over 17 years without the proper certification. Geoffrey Wall, 59, was arrested in Ontario on Tuesday following a four-month investigation by Peel Regional Police. He is charged with fraud, forgery, and public mischief, among other counts. According to authorities, Wall commanded more than 900 domestic and international flights between 2009 and 2025 using fraudulent documents. While he held a valid commercial pilot license, investigators say he lacked the airline transport pilot license—the highest level required to captain commercial aircraft. Police believe he misled both Air Canada and regulators about his credentials until his retirement in 2025. Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah called the case deeply troubling, saying it strikes at public trust and safety. “The accused is alleged to have put hundreds of thousands of passengers at risk,” he said in a statement. Air Canada responded by saying passenger safety was never compromised. The airline noted that Wall passed mandatory training every six months and annual flight checks, consistently demonstrating a high level of competency. Once the airline discovered the issue, officials say Wall was immediately removed from duty, and the matter was voluntarily reported to Transport Canada. An audit of all other pilots found no similar problems. Hassan Shahidi, a licensed pilot and head of the Flight Safety Foundation, described the case as rare but significant. “If proven, it shows a failure in the system that verifies licenses,” he said. “But the pilot wasn’t untrained—he just bypassed a key regulatory step.” Wall’s legal representatives could not be reached for comment.
