A Family's Stay at an Autism-Certified Beach Resort: What It Was Really Like

Beaches Resorts, which were featured on Condé Nast Traveler's Bright Ideas in Travel 2025 list, are Advanced Certified Autism Centers. One mother of two teens, including a 15-year-old autistic daughter, shared her family's experience at the Turks and Caicos property.

Before the trip, the resort offered an optional pre-visit questionnaire about the child's communication, triggers, favorite activities, and swimming level. Staff used that to reserve an oceanview suite in a quieter area, arrange private airport transfers, and share details about inclusive day camps and a 1:1 "Beaches Buddy" service.

During the stay, the family found a peaceful, nearly empty stretch of beach, and staff checked in about sensory needs at a loud teppanyaki dinner, offering noise-reducing headphones and a quiet garden nearby. A planned snorkeling trip was canceled due to wind, but a Buddy swam with the daughter at the pool and later supported her during a spa visit.

The resort also provides a detailed sensory guide rating areas by touch, taste, sight, smell, and sound, and identifying low-sensory zones. The mother noted that many accommodations were simple to provide, and that feeling welcomed made a significant difference for her family. She hopes other hotels follow suit.
