A Dream Voyage Ends in Mystery: Husband Detained After Wife Lost at Sea in Bahamas

Lynette Hooker’s smile was bright, her excitement palpable. In a video from March 2023, she stood on the deck of the sailboat *Soul Mate* as it slipped through the fog in Kemah, Texas. “We’re finally leaving,” she announced, marking the start of a long-planned sailing adventure she and her husband, Brian, documented online.

That documented dream has now become a grim mystery. Lynette, 55, is missing in the Atlantic waters near the Bahamas. Her husband is in a Bahamian jail, detained by police investigating her disappearance.

According to Brian Hooker’s account to authorities, the couple was in a small motorboat traveling between islands last Saturday night when Lynette, who had the engine keys, fell overboard. He reported that the engine cut off and strong currents swept her away before he could reach her. He paddled to shore and raised the alarm early Sunday.

Police arrested Brian on Wednesday. His attorney, Terrel Butler, stated his client denies any wrongdoing and is cooperating. Butler said Brian would remain in custody at least through Monday as the investigation proceeds.

But questions surround the couple’s story. Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, told NBC News it seems unlikely her experienced mother would “just fall” from a boat. The family noted Lynette grew up around water, comfortable on boats and with swimming.

Court records reveal a turbulent marital history. In 2015, both Brian and Lynette accused each other of assault during a drunken argument in Michigan. Lynette was arrested, though a warrant was later denied. Aylesworth described their relationship as volatile, particularly when alcohol was involved.

Their social media page, ‘Sailing Hookers,’ painted a different picture: a couple working side-by-side to restore their boat, sharing jokes and foghorn blasts as they embarked on their Caribbean journey. The contrast between those sun-drenched videos and the current investigation is stark. The U.S. Coast Guard has opened a parallel inquiry as Bahamian authorities piece together the events of that Saturday night.
