A Big Baby Arrives at Ohio Safari Park: Meet Julip, the Future Giant

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — There’s a new face—and a very large future—at African Safari Wildlife Park. The park welcomed a female giant eland calf named Julip on May 9, born to parents Aerie and Beau. While she may be small now, Julip will one day grow into one of the most imposing animals on the property.

Giant elands are the largest antelope species on Earth, native to the forests and savannas of Central and West Africa. Adult males can stand six feet tall at the shoulder, stretch more than nine feet in length, and tip the scales at a staggering 2,650 pounds. Females are smaller but still formidable, reaching up to 1,300 pounds.

Don’t let their size fool you, though. These animals are surprisingly agile. Giant elands can sprint at 43 miles per hour and leap over six feet straight up from a standstill. They’re also known for their striking spiral horns, which add to their regal appearance.

For now, Julip is exploring her habitat alongside the herd and may be spotted by guests driving through the park’s Drive-Thru Safari. Park officials say she’s healthy, curious, and already drawing smiles from visitors. If you’re planning a trip, check the park’s website for hours and admission details.
