A Bali Swim Nearly Ends in Tragedy: Couple's Brush with a Hidden Current

A Russian couple’s ocean swim on Bali’s coast turned into a desperate fight for survival this week, highlighting a hidden danger for island visitors. Polina, who shared her story on Instagram, said she and her husband were swimming near others when an unseen force began pulling them out to sea.

Their attempts to swim back to shore quickly drained their energy. Panic set in. "We were starting to drown," Polina recounted. "My husband used all his strength trying to swim and began to slip beneath the surface. I was still afloat, screaming for help."

Their cries were heard by two young men swimming closer to shore. One reached Polina’s husband first, while the second helped Polina, who had managed to hook her feet on a rock during a wave, back to land.

"It was immense luck those guys were there," she said, noting the absence of lifeguards on that stretch of beach. "No one else came for us. People on the sand wouldn’t have heard us."

The incident occurred despite calm surface conditions, a deceptive feature of rip currents. Polina expressed shock upon learning such currents are common around Bali, often occurring in spots popular with tourists.

She posted her video as a stark warning to others. Her account follows a separate, fatal incident earlier this year where another Russian tourist was swept out to sea in Indonesia, a reminder of the ocean’s unpredictable power.
