A Backpacker's Surprise: British Tourist Mistakes Labor for Illness, Gives Birth in Australia

A six-month adventure along Australia's east coast turned into a life-changing event for a young British couple last July. Hattie Sheppard, 21, and her boyfriend, Bailey Chidlow, 22, were enjoying the trip of a lifetime when a sudden, severe stomach ache sent Sheppard to a Queensland hospital. She believed she had a bad case of food poisoning.

Doctors performed an ultrasound to investigate. 'I turned and looked at the doctor's face,' Sheppard told the New York Post, 'and he had the most confused look I've ever seen.' The diagnosis was not an infection. Sheppard was in active labor.

Stunned, Sheppard explained she had been on birth control and had experienced no typical pregnancy symptoms. She had even worn larger clothing without suspecting the reason. Ten hours later, she and Chidlow welcomed a daughter, Isla-Grace Chidlow.

Medical staff later explained that an anterior placenta—positioned at the front of the uterus—had cushioned the baby's movements, hiding the pregnancy entirely. The couple, from Doncaster, UK, are now preparing to return home with an unexpected new travel companion. 'Honestly, I couldn't be happier,' Sheppard said. Their Australian souvenir is one they'll cherish forever.
