13 Quick Escapes from Los Angeles: Snow, Sun, and Sea Within a Four-Hour Drive

Los Angeles is a launchpad for weekend trips, with mountains, deserts, vineyards, islands, and coastal towns all within easy reach. While the city itself has world-class dining and culture, exploring beyond it is just as rewarding. After five years of living there, one traveler has rounded up 13 favorite getaways, all under a four-hour drive.

Las Vegas, about four hours away, offers a party scene that LA lacks, with clubs, resorts, shows, and the Sphere. Santa Barbara, two hours north, is a laid-back beach town with a courthouse viewpoint, the Funk Zone, and Montecito for celebrity spotting. The Channel Islands, reachable by car and boat, offer camping, isolation, and endemic species, but no hotels or cell service. Catalina Island, an hour by boat, features car-free Avalon, hiking, and water sports.

San Luis Obispo, three hours out, is a slower, less crowded version of Santa Barbara, with beaches, wineries, and Hearst Castle nearby. Sequoia National Park, 3.5 hours away, is home to the General Sherman Tree and Mount Whitney. Santa Ynez Valley, two hours away, is an unpretentious wine region with ranch culture, tasting rooms, and Solvang’s Danish streets. Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico, four hours away, is a culinary hotspot for Baja Med food and wine tours.

Palm Springs, two hours away, is a desert retreat with midcentury architecture, a booming food scene, and many hotels. Ojai, 1.5 hours away, is a creative small town with citrus groves, an outdoor bookstore, and a farmers market. Joshua Tree, two hours away, has an otherworldly vibe, star-filled skies, and a lively Pioneertown outpost. Big Bear, two hours away, is a biodiverse mountain town with skiing, hiking, and a rustic downtown. Desert Hot Springs, also two hours away, is known for its mineral springs and wellness-focused stays.
